Carpet Cleaning Tips

Pet Accident? Follow these spotting directions:

  • Blot up as much of the urine as possible. Do not scrub. When you think you have as much of it up as possible, blot the area again using a towel soaked in warm water. Be careful not to get the area too wet- you may force the urine deeper. Blot the area again with a dry towel.

  • Next, apply a low-residue carpet spot remover, let it sit for 60 seconds and again blot the spot.

  • Finally, fold a dry towel to several layers, place over the spot and apply at least 10 pounds of weight. Let it sit overnight. When you remove the towel, fluff the carpet up and allow to dry. If the spot returns after a few days, repeat the last two steps.

After the carpet dries, stick your nose down to the carpet and give it a good whiff. Any odor? If so, please be very careful what you use. Most store-bought deodorizers only work in mild odor situations. Don't over use them, you may do more harm than good. You can always call us if you need any help or if you would just rather a professional take care of the job.

Carpet Cleaning and Protectant

Just like your clothing, your automobile and your home, your carpet needs regular preventative maintenance to help it look and perform its best. Regular care will not only keep your carpet looking fresh and new, but can actually add years to its life.

Just as you put wax on your car to protect its finish from the elements and to keep it looking newer longer, your carpeting needs a protective treatment too.

Vacuum Up Dirt Easier

Protectant creates an invisible shield, which allows you to vacuum soil away more easily. Proper vacuuming is crucial because it helps remove abrasive dirt particles, which can make your beautiful carpet look dull and dingy. This everyday soil can actually shorten the life of your carpet.

Spill Something? Don't Panic

Protectant provides a "window of opportunity" for you to remove common household stains. Carpets that are unprotected can absorb spills so quickly that even your best efforts to remove them are fruitless. Protectant creates an invisible barrier which helps keeps stains (like fruit punch) from becoming a permanent part of the carpet fibers. While no carpet is bulletproof, carpet protectant gives you a fighting chance.

You take pride in the appearance of your home. After all, it says a lot about you. Your carpet is a crucial part of your indoor space. Its color, style, condition and cleanliness reflect upon you as an individual. Let protectant help you maintain the beauty of your carpet. The next time Dry-Concepts cleans your carpets, ask your technician for carpet protectant. You will be glad you did!

Carpet Cleaning Tips

We will be putting up a new page to our website (www.dryconcepts.com) about carpet cleaning tips. But before it goes live we wanted to share one of the number one tips or things that you can do for your carpet to keep it looking good.

Vacuum!

Vacuuming is one of the most important steps to any cleaning process and many people have a vacuum in their house right now. But the important thing to remember is to use it and use it often. Depending on the amount of traffic that a carpet may have it should be vacuumed at least once a week. If you have kids or pets then a couple times of week may be necessary.

The longer dirt, sand or other abrasive materials remain in the carpet the more harm they can cause. All of those types of dry soils damage the individual fibers in the carpet and the carpet will start to begin to look like its worn out. This is why vacuuming is so important.

Another important point to any carpet cleaning process is that pre-vacuuming is a must! It is much easier to remove these dry soils in the dry state rather than add a liquid to them first and then try to remove some muddy substance.

Carpet Care and Your Families Health

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says… “Until such a time as the carpet fibers are cleaned, the potential for human exposure and health risk remains high.” “Every time carpets and fabrics are emptied of their pollution build-up through professional cleaning methods, there is a health benefit.”
Imagine a carpeted floor and a hard surface floor in your home, office or work area. Let’s say that you vacuum the carpet daily and sweep the floor daily. Six months later, what would your hard floor look like? Remember, you have only swept the floor, not mopped. You would have a grungy looking hard floor, but the carpet would still look good. The reason for this is that carpet does not magically repel dirt...it hides it! Same dirt on both floors, you just can’t see it on the carpet...yet.
The problem: Carpet by its design, hides dirt. By the time soil becomes apparent, it is no longer a light duty-cleaning chore, it has become a heavy-duty restoration. The ability of the cleaning process to achieve a desirable appearance is affected by the amount of soil and the length of time it has been in the carpet. Without a quality maintenance plan, the carpet is eventually replaced, not because it has “worn out,” but because cleaning no longer improves the appearance. The carpet has “uglied out.” The overall annual cost of owning a carpet can be reduced, if it is properly maintained. You could effectively extend your carpets life by 3 to 5 years.
The solution: Regular maintenance programs are your best protection against the build-up of soils, mold spores, chemicals, dust mites and other pollutants that accumulate in your carpet and upholstery. Protect your family’s health by calling Dry-Concepts and asking about our residential maintenance contract program.

How is carpet dry cleaning done?

Dry cleaning carpet is similar to dry cleaning clothing. Dry cleaning means that, primarily, solvents rather than water are used. In the case of your clothes, they are "wet" with a dry cleaning solution called perchloroethane. After cleaning, your clothing must be allowed to dry.

Perchloroethane cannot be used on your carpet but other environmentally friendly solvents can be. First your carpets are thoroughly vacuumed to remove dust, sand, pet hair and other particulate soil. This is the most important step in any carpet cleaning procedure. Then the dry cleaning solution is sprayed on your carpet a section at a time, then worked into the fibers of the carpet with a brush and allowed to sit for 3-6 minutes to allow sufficient dwell time. During this time, the dry cleaning solution, Ultra Dry, emulsifies soils in preparation for their removal. A highly absorbent cleaning pad is immersed in a heated solution called Ultra Catalyst. The excess is wrung out so that the pad is damp and very hot. This hot treated pad is spun on the carpet with a floor machine to absorb the Ultra Dry and suspended soils. The Ultra Catalyst increases the attraction between the pad and the soil suspended by the Ultra Dry. The heat of the pad also increases cleaning power.

Additionally Ultra Catalyst and Ultra Dry provide deodorizing action for mild odor problems. Once the carpet has gone through this process a cotton "finishing pad" will be spun across the carpet to remove as much moisture from the carpet as possible as well as to check to see if the carpet still has any soil in it and if it needs to be cleaned again before moving onto the next section. Once the cleaning process has been completed, the carpet is then groomed and the pile of the carpet is left feeling soft and clean. This would also be a good time to apply a solvent based fabric protectant onto the freshly cleaned carpet to help prevent against future stains and to allow the carpet to be cleaned more easily the next time it is needed.

Depending on how the carpet is used (i.e. lots of kids or pets) it should be professionally cleaned every 12-24 months. To help keep the carpet cleaner longer it should be vacuumed at least once a week (twice a week if there are kids and pets) and spots or spills should be addressed as soon as possible to help prevent staining.

Dry cleaning carpet is safe, neat, and returns your carpet to use in 1-3 hours.

Does dry cleaning really get the deep down dirt?

All cleaning methods are designed to thoroughly clean the yarns of the carpet. Dry cleaning is no exception. Ultra Dry and Ultra Catalyst work together to provide deep cleaning all the way to the backing of your carpet.

However, neglect can allow soil to accumulate to the level where soil is pushed into the backing of the carpet and even below the carpet. Therefore, it is recommended that carpets be cleaned regularly to prevent this excessive build up of soil.

How often should I clean my carpets?

The E.P.A. recommends cleaning your carpet a minimum of once a year. However, E.P.A. studies show that environmental conditions can increase the frequency of needed cleanings. Factors such as location of your home, humidity, pets, and children can create the need to clean your carpets as often as every two to three months.

Your technician can recommend a cleaning schedule to fit your needs. Dry-Concepts has a Carpet Appearance Maintenance Program designed to help you maintain your carpet in like-new condition for many years.
